A wonderful 'go-to' plant for attracting bees and butterflies, 'Liquorice Blue' produces elegant poker-like flower spikes packed with small purplish blue nectar-rich blooms above anise scented mid-green foliage. Emerging in June, regular deadheading encourages the stems to branch-out and more flowers to develop, the ensuing display building up to a crescendo in September.
Hailing from Korea, Japan and China where it is found growing within grassed areas alongside mountain streams, it is very hardy and easy to grow if planted in a free-draining soil where it can bask in the sun. Although perennial it can sometimes be short-lived so it is always worth saving seed to re-sow the following year. Perfect for bridging the 'August slump' in the garden, it complements many styles of planting, combining as comfortably with ornamental grasses and GAURA as shrubs roses in a mixed border. A great candidate for your cutting garden too.
