Similar in colour and height to one of its hybrid parents ALLIUM hollandicum 'Purple Sensation' but sporting more open clusters of flowers like ALLIUM christophii its other parent, 'Purple Rain' is an elegant addition to the midsummer garden.  Its flowerheads are an impressive 15cm across, filled with nectar-rich flowers that entice butterflies and bees alike.

Once the colourful floral display is over, allow the seedheads to develop as without disturbance they will stay upright far into autumn, continuing a sense of lightness and transparency.  Like other alliums its deep hue can make many happy combinations in the garden from cooler themed soft pinks, whites and purples to more jewel-like oranges, limes and rusty reds.  Reliable and versatile it suits a range of garden themes from informal, cottage and gravel to more formal courtyard and urban. Easy to grow and drought resistant, it needs full sun and a free draining soil to thrive.
