With their wide-eyed daisy flowers and mounds of delicately cut leaves, the 'winter windflower' is high on the list of favourite spring flowers. 'Violet Star' is particularly charming with its intense violet petals, each with a soft white base, that encircle and set off contrasting lime stamens.
Flowering in early spring, they are a good choice for a woodland garden as they prefer a humus-rich, free draining soil in either dappled shade or sun. They look wonderful planted in naturalistic drifts meandering around and under deciduous trees and shrubs. But they will earn their place too at the front of a border, delivering intense colour and attracting pollinators in their droves. As they die back totally after flowering, only to return again in spring, mark where you have planted them to avoid digging them up in error.
