In early spring, a sea of small, white, starry double flowers with very ruffled centres appears, lighting up shadier areas of the garden and woodland. Once flowering has finished, the whole plant dies back to below ground level becoming summer dormant (summer deciduous).
Excellent for ground cover, it also works well planted beneath deciduous shrubs such as Physocarpus opulifolius 'Lady in Red', adding early season colour. They like a rich organic soil in a shady border, where you can combine them with later season flowering plants such as Geranium 'Ann Folkard'.
