A recent introduction to the 'Boulevard Series', 'Daiyu' stands out for its large eye-catching, deep cerise flowers, each studded with a white fringed matching cerise eye that emerge from the leaf axils along its flowering stems, resulting in colour from the base of the plant to its top. Specifically bred to be compact for a container on a terrace, it is also long flowering, with blooms produced in succession from May to October. Perfect too for disguising the bare legs of a rose shrub or taller Clematis.
Fairly unfussy with respect to aspect, it thrives in partial shade but can cope with more sun, but remember that Clematis prefer to keep their roots cool. A moist, free-draining soil is best. Being a Group 3 Clematis, it should be cut back hard to 25cm above the ground in late winter/early spring.
