One of the loveliest spring sights must be a carpet of Fritallaria meleagris, their demure heads seemingly fashioned from pink or purple snakeskin, nodding gently in the breeze on slender stems bowing under their weight.
It loves a fertile, damp but well-drained soil in partial shade or sun. As it copes well with moist conditions all year round, it is ideal for clay soils, but can tolerate freer draining soils if cool and moist in the summer. Native to the UK it happily naturalises in grass, but also looks lovely incorporated in spring planters.
