With its deep blackberry-coloured single flowers with contrasting yellow stamens gently nodding above dark reddish purple stems and glossy dark green foliage, this must be one of the most striking new hellebore introductions this year.
Its compelling exotic looks would be showcased perfectly against oranges, yellows, greens and whites in any winter garden or container. For an eye-catching combination why not plant it in front of the bright olive green winter stems of Cornus sericea 'Flaviramea'. Like other Helleborus orientalis it thrives in a fairly shady spot in a fertile, humus rich soil. As it dislikes being split, an organic matter mulch in autumn will help feed it and improve the soil.
