There is something rather charming and old-fashioned about Helleborus orientalis 'Magic Double Yellow's' flowers - each carrying a gentle ruff of soft creamy yellow petals encircling a fresh green centre and lime stamens. The petals are further distinguished by delicate deep red flecks which can vary in this recently introduced series from the merest hint to eye-catching splashes.
A strong performer in the winter garden, it puts on a striking floral display from late winter deep into spring, its large flowers nodding demurely above mounds of leathery evergreen foliage. Ideal for brightening up a shadier area of a garden or winter container, it combines well with the red stems of Cornus alba 'Sibirica' and Ajuga reptans 'Catlin's Giant'. It prefers a fertile, non-acidic, moist but free draining soil in partial shade.
Irritant to the skin, harmful if eaten.
