Physostegia virginiana 'Rosea' produces densely packed spikes of individual two-lipped pink flowers during the summer. Beneath the flower spikes lance-shaped green leaves with a serrated margin cover the upright stems. Commonly know as the Obedient Plant it acquired its common name because If you hold an individual flower and turn it on the stem it will obediently stay in place.
Moisture retentive soils are perfect for this perennial, it can even cope with wet boggy areas and is a useful marginal plant for planting alongside watercourses. It will grow happily in either sun or dapped shade. In the autumn you can cut it back to the base.
