Purple toadflax 'Canon Went' is a lot tougher and hardier than its willowy flowerspikes bursting with tiny soft pink blooms would suggest.  Flowering all summer long and into autumn, its naturalistic form is a definite shoe-in for a cottage garden, weaving delicate vertical interest through a herbaceous border or against a sunny wall.

Although it grows in most soils, it absolutely thrives in a light, fairly fertile, free-draining soil in full sun.  Perfect, therefore, for a gravel or mediterranean garden, where it will happily self-seed, popping up in unexpected places.  But it is easy to control, just cut back faded flower spikes before seed forms.  Bees and butterflies love it too.
