Like a troupe of enthusiastic cheerleaders encouraging the start of spring, 'Joyce' bursts from the ground in February with a flourish of deep blue flowers, each picked out with a golden throat accompanied by narrow grass-like foliage.
Exquisite and petite, plant it in groups for a sea of jewel-like colour that will capture the eye, especially when contrasted with early yellow Narcissus. Happily at home in a variety of garden styles from cottage to more formal courtyard, its preference for a free draining soil in full sun makes it a striking colour choice for a gravel garden or rockery. It can even tolerate coastal salt-laden air. If colonies of bulbs become too large, they can be lifted and carefully split apart in early autumn.
