One of the most stunning and iconic sights in a country garden must be Lavandula angustifolia, or True Lavender as it is commonly known, in full flower.  In June and July it bears masses of tall stems, each topped with a short spike of scented, pale purple flowers that fan out from a small base, creating a purple haze floating above its narrow grey-green foliage that veritably buzzes with bees .

Said to be the toughest and hardiest Lavender, it thrives in full sun in a free-draining alkaline or neutral soil, but can cope with more acidic conditions too, just make sure its feet or roots are not waterlogged.  Very versatile, it suits a variety of gardens from gravel through mediterranean to wildlife and cottage gardens.
