Tall and elegant, 'Crown Jewel's' flower spikes are packed with soft lilac-blue blooms, each set off by a large velvety-black eye, standing high above dark green divided foliage. From mid summer into early autumn it puts on a glamorous show, effortlessly bridging the 'August gap' when some gardens can seem a little flat, their earlier flowering perennials having faded.
Robust and reliable, it adds drama and verticality to a border, contrasting deliciously with deep purples, whites and pinks. This quintessential cottage garden perennial needs full sun and a fertile, free-draining soil with some moisture to flourish. Perfect too for a cutting garden as the blooms cut well for arrangements.
Harmful if eaten.
