This unusual Hydrangea is aptly named for the delicious colour of its young foliage, deep purplish-green with dark red undersides that contrast beautifully with the large lace cap flowers. Produced in a long lasting display from mid summer into autumn, the delightful blooms are formed of soft pink outer sterile ray florets that draw the eye and pollinators towards the inner clusters of lavender blue fertile florets. As a further bonus the leaves take on mellow golden tones in autumn before falling.
With its striking looks 'Hot Chocolate' makes a fantastic specimen shrub for the garden, suiting both an informal cottage style and more sophisticated courtyard scheme. Easy to grow, it prefers a fertile, free draining soil in part shade protected from cold winds.
