Spring is definitely here and there are shoots bursting everywhere. It is hard to limit the list of tasks to only 5 this month, but here goes:
Keep a close eye on your planters. With continuing cold drying winds a strong possibility planters can dry out quickly, so keep an eye on foliage and water if plants start to droop.
Hardening off more tender plants can be a tricky affair at this time of year. In the Nursery Shop we have been shuttling more tender plants under the shop canopy on cold evenings when frost is expected and bringing them out again the next morning. The temperature has been boomeranging up and down the thermometer. Yes it can be laborious but pays dividends when your more tender plants finally get a chance to take off and flourish.
Keep on top of the weeding. In the blink of an eye everything including the weeds are off the blocks and running. Pick a dry day with a gentle breeze and pull or hoe annual and ephemeral weeds before they set seed. You can leave them to dry out on the beds. Rather satisfying.
If you have kept a photographic diary of your garden through the year, check where the gaps are. Remember some plants such as Echinacea come up late and need a space around them to thrive, so keep surrounding plants back.
Keep sowing your hardy annual seeds, either in-situ outside or in modules. Hold on sowing the half-hardy seeds until after the frosts have finished or sow them under cover.
