Seasonal Customer Sales Assistant (Sundays and an occasional Saturday, March to September 2024)

Hardy’s Cottage Garden Plants is a family run nursery specialising in the production and sales of herbaceous perennials. The nursery is situated in a rural location, a few miles from the town of Whitchurch in Hampshire.

Our small, friendly sales team in our retail area are looking to recruit a staff member to work Sundays from March until the end of September 2024, alongside an experienced member of our current team. You may also be required to cover the occasional Saturday to cover absences.

We are passionate about plants and customer service and you need to share our passion. You will be working directly with our customers, offering horticultural advice and making sales. Good communication skills are key, as is self-motivation and computer literacy.  We will give you training to use our sales and stock control technology to the necessary standard for this role.

You will be required to water, weed and keep the sales area tidy and stocked when not serving customers.  Please note that this is a physical job which requires some manual lifting, for example plants, boxes and bags of compost. The role also entails a lot of walking.  As you can imagine we work outside for almost the whole of the working day whatever the weather.

Our weekend opening hours are

Sunday 10am - 4pm.  March – End of September

Saturday 10am - 5pm   March – End of September

The successful candidate would be expected to be on-site half an hour prior to opening and to finish work approx. 30 mins after closing time.

The person will need to have either a horticultural qualification or demonstrate a keen interest and basic knowledge of herbaceous perennials.  We will also require details of two referees that we can contact.

This job would suit a horticultural student or a person with good horticultural experience, plus customer services skills.

Unfortunately  in this post we are unable to provide the level of supervision required to  fulfil our legal obligations towards younger workers and therefore request applications from those aged 18 years old  or over.

Please note that we are situated in a rural location. You’re likely to need your own transport to get to and from the nursery, although there is a bus stop at the bottom of the lane.

We are happy to accept applications from those who are self employed as well as those who'd like to be PAYE.

Please email [email protected] either to ask for more information or to apply enclosing a brief CV and the contact details for your two referees .
