Hakonechloa macra 'Nicolas'

Height x Spread:  35cm x 45cm

Similar in form to other Japanese Forest Grasses, 'Nicolas', however, has a colourful secret.  From summer onwards it forms lush mounds of tumbling narrow green foliage with small, slightly insignificant green flowers.  Come the autumn though and cooler temperatures, the leaves of more mature plants turn fiery red and orange before fading to brown and staying upright over winter.

Perfect for adding unusual autumnal colour to a shadier garden, use it for striking edging or naturalistic 'summer through winter' structure within a woodland garden too.  It prefers a damp, humus-rich soil with some drainage in partial shade but can also cope with sunnier sites.
