This is PIPKIN or 'THE QUEEN OF FLOOF', a rather gorgeous three year old lemon roan Working Cocker Spaniel who comes to work each day with her human Hazel, our cuttings propagator for over 10 years.
As such Pipkin's domain is the Keder, the small insulated polytunnel at the top of the nursery. So you may only have seen her in the distance moving at speed as she escapes the Keder on the flimsy excuse of having seen something a tad dodgy at the bottom of the nursery that needs HER and ONLY HER immediate attention before Hazel realises that she has gone. As Hazel has eyes in the back of her head Pipkin rarely makes it all the way to the bottom but we are keeping a sweepstake on it.
Why the 'Queen of Floof'? Well, Pipkin is quite simply all things FLOOFY. Yes she is beautiful with the most amazing fur that is a hairdresser's dream but she is also the nursery clown and has only two speeds - OFF i.e. sleeping, but actually totally alert or ON, when she just keeps moving as anyone who stops to say hello will testify. She circles you like a shark but strangely enough only anti-clockwise. How floofy is that?
What are your duties at Hardy's? Chasing trespassing birds that foolishly wander into the nursery, I'm on their case!! Bees and butterflies too, bit trickier to catch but I'll always give it a go.
Do you have a strict daily routine? Of course. First thing, watching the sunrise - we get to work long before the others are even up. I religiously check the Keder for intruders, none found yet, but you never know.
Then a snooze.... before the visitors (Rob, Rosy and Elaine) drop by to say hello and tickle my belly. It's a tough job but someone has to do it. That normally takes me to tea break and three dog biscuits (yes three Archie HA-HA).
Then off to the polytunnels and catch up with Bagel, Milly and Tramp, always with an eye to what is going on outside in case I am needed. That's me, always on call - hang on is that a partridge in Section 1?
Don't you ever relax? Well if I must, that's an afternoon job - I'm totally sparko until dinner time. Still trying to work out how best to keep in my bed while doing my stretches but it will come.
