Bulbs when planted in settings such as under trees, in informal grassy areas and in lawns can produce a high impact naturalistic effect with little effort.
As nature rarely plants in straight lines and to overcome our tendency to plant in lines, here are our top 2 tips to help you achieve the naturalistic planting style.
1.Play a gentle game of crown green bowling with your bulbs. Take the bulbs and gently roll them along the ground. Assuming you are not a bowling wizard the bulbs should distribute at various spots throughout the garden, plant the bulbs where they stop. There will be uneven spacing and possibly fairly large gaps, which over time should fill as the bulbs naturalise.
2. Plant a fish shape. Plant a group of bulbs together much like the body shape of a fish. Then plant a few as a trailing tail or fin, using less bulbs as you move away from the body. This fluid shape will suggest a natural drift.
Once planted, the varieties we've listed below will naturalise, meaning they will reproduce and disperse across the garden without further work or intervention.
