Description

Hesperantha coccinea 'Oregon Sunset'

Height x Spread: 50-100cm x 50cm

This is a vigorous clump forming, rhizomatous perennial with lance shaped leaves an tall stems that flower from August to November. This makes it very useful for adding much needed colour late in the year. The flowers are arranged on the stem in a similar manner to Gladiolus and are star shaped with six petals. 'Oregon Sunset' has rich coral red flowers that are up to 4cm in diameter.

The genus originated in South Africa and is suited to consistently moist but well drained soils in full sun. 'Oregon Sunset' was bred in the USA at Gossler Farms Nursery in Oregon.

Hardy to -10 degrees C in the UK, it it best situated in a sheltered sunny site away from the wind. A dry mulch of leaves in Autumn will help protect the crown and any new buds in Spring.  Happy in any moist soil and pH, mature clumps can be divided in Spring. The stems on this plant are quite strong making it excellent as a cut flower.  Pruning is unnecessary as any old leaves or stems can be gently pulled away at the base. Generally pest and disease free, rabbits will also leave it alone.

Ideal for extending the flowering season of your garden, it can be used in sunny courtyard, city, cottage and informal gardens as well as beds and borders
