Disporum longistylum 'Green Giant'

Disporum longistylum ‘Green Giant’ was discovered by the American plantsman Dan Hinkley growing in Sichuan Province, China. A tall, clump-forming, rhizomatous perennial, it produces upright, bamboo-like stems with glossy, deeply veined, lance-shaped leaves — sometimes tinted purple when young. In late spring and early summer, small pendent clusters of creamy yellow-green flowers appear, with protruding stamens and style, followed by berries that ripen to black in autumn.

Best in humus-rich, free-draining soil in partial shade, its architectural form and long season of interest — from emerging foliage through to autumn berries — make it a striking specimen for a woodland border.
