Helianthus salicifolius is a herbaceous, perennial sunflower as remarkable for its foliage as for its flowers. It develops tall, elegant stems clothed from top to bottom in fresh green, narrow thread-like leaves that arch gracefully outwards, creating a fine, transparent silhouette of striking presence. From late summer into autumn, each stem is topped by a spray of vivid yellow daisy flowers, the petals gently ruffled as they open and each bloom set off by a warm cinnamon centre.
Its bold vertical form and fine foliage give it an unexpectedly exotic quality, contrasting well with larger-leaved plants. It is well suited to prairie-style planting alongside tall ornamental grasses such as Miscanthus and Calamagrostis, its flowers dancing amongst the fine seed heads of the grasses. It thrives in fertile, neutral to alkaline soil in full sun.
