Origanum laevigatum

Height x Spread: 45cm x 60cm

Commonly known as smooth oregano for the tiny, fragrant evergreen leaves that cloak its woody stems, this ornamental herb deserves to be better known and more widely planted.  From mid summer onwards it produces clusters of tiny pink flowers on dark willowy stems that attract bees, hoverflies and butterflies in their droves, before forming attractive seedheads that can last through winter.

Mediterranean in origin, it thrives in a poor, well drained soil in full sun, but can tolerate partial shade too although less flowers will form.  Perfect for a gravel or wildlife garden, it also works well in a sunny container combined with ornamental Pennisetum grasses or a hanging basket.  Easy to grow, a quick haircut in spring or autumn will soon tidy up its slightly informal habit.
