Fiery crimson flower spikes rise above bold, heart-shaped foliage from summer through to early autumn, giving this clump-forming perennial an exceptionally long season of interest. Commonly known as Red Bistort, ‘Firetail’ has large, prominently veined leaves that clasp the stems — a characteristic reflected in the species name amplexicaulis.
The species is native to the Himalayas; ‘Firetail’ is a selected cultivar valued for its vivid crimson flower colour. It is happiest in sun or partial shade and thrives in moisture-retentive soils — making it an ideal choice for planting along streams, around pond edges or in boggy situations. Cut back spent spikes after flowering to keep the plant tidy.
