Salvia nemorosa 'Amethyst'
Height x Spread: 60cm x 45cm
Elegant, slender spikes of lilac-pink flowers that open upwards from their base to tip, are borne in profusion on upright stems above aromatic mid green foliage. This form of Balkan Clary has a warm red tint to it due to the maroon bracts and looks lovely combined with lime greens, dark reds and soft oranges.
Its bushy, distinctive form adds to the harmony and structure of a border, especially when contrasted with more rounded and mounding forms. A striking addition to a Mediterranean or courtyard garden, it can tolerate coastal conditions too. Bees adore it. Long flowering, just snip out spent flowers above a pair of unflowered stems and leaves, to initiate their flowering. It thrives in a light, moderately rich soil that is free draining but remains moist. Full sun is best, but it can cope with light shade.
