Delicate, nodding lilac flowers appear during spring on this short-lived perennial, above low growing mounds of green foliage, similar to an Aquilegia. Growing naturally in damp, mossy woodlands in China, it self-seeds profusely. Just remove unwanted seedlings.
It is often used for edging borders or along paths, but is also a good choice for a woodland garden, due to its naturalistic form and ability to thrive in partial shade as well as sun. Alternatively, plant it beneath roses or shrubs to disguise naked stems. It will flourish in any reasonably good soil in sun or light shade.
