Symphyotrichum novi-belgii 'Davey's True Blue' produces an exceptional depth of colour for a Michaelmas Daisy. Each flower carries a wide ruff of deep lavender-blue narrow petals encircling a golden-yellow centre — a rich and complementary combination that sustains a long flowering display from September into October.

For bold contrast, combine it with the yellows and oranges of Rudbeckia and Kniphofia; for a softer palette, the pinks of Hesperantha work beautifully, with ornamental grasses such as Molinia and Calamagrostis woven through for movement. It is excellent as a cut flower, and the faded flower heads are well worth leaving through winter — particularly beautiful when touched by frost. It thrives in sun or light shade in fertile, moist but well-drained soil.

Divide clumps every 3–4 years to maintain vigour — any time after flowering but spring is preferred. Cut back stems after flowering in autumn. Taller selections may require staking. Symphyotrichum novi-belgii cultivars benefit from good air circulation to help prevent mildew.
