Native to the western USA, this plant grows in damp meadows and prairies and is attractive to butterflies. A relative of the Iris it enjoys fertile, neutral to alkaline soil that is moist but well drained. It is hardy to -10 degrees C and is semi evergreen. The leaves are bluey green and grass like and the flowers are star shaped and bright blue with a yellow throat,
Flowering from late spring to early summer; it is ideal for patios, containers, rock gardens, pond edges, damp meadows, cottage, informal or courtyard gardens. Mature clumps can be divided in spring or it can be left to seed about.
