Paeonia ‘Norwegian Blush’

Height x Spread: 70cm x 60cm

Itoh or Intersectional Paeonia originated in China and were created by Toichi Itoh. They are a cross between the lactiflora type Paeonia which are herbaceous perennials and the woody Tree Paeonia. They are hardier and more resilient to high heat and humidity than their woody parent. 'Norwegian Blush' is a rare and sought-after form of this type of Paeonia

It has finely cut dark green foliage on a study framework of stems. The lightly fragrant flowers appear from May and are single or semi double and large with lilac petals edged in white with a deep pink blush at the base.

Happy in moist but free draining soil of any pH, these plants like an open sunny or partially shaded site, protected from strong winds. Unlike their herbaceous counterparts the attractive foliage lasts much longer and takes on fiery tones in autumn.

Plant them shallowly, with their basal buds no deeper than 2cm below the surface of the soil. Ensure that the soil stays free draining even in the winter and your plant could live for up to 70 years. 'Norwegian Blush is a relatively new introduction with the first recorded flower in 1990 and first propagated in 1993.

The woody stems die back to just a few centimetres in winter and new growth appears at the base in Spring. Do not apply manure around this plant as it can cause root rot.

A worthy and glorious addition to large containers, cottage, informal, courtyard and city gardens, this will also make for superb cut flowers.

Harmful if eaten.
