Top plants for adding colour now and into the Autumn

Bistorta affinis ‘Superba’

This sun loving perennial spreads to make a weed-supressing mat of bee magnet flowers held on straight stems. These are held approx. 25cm tall over semi-evergreen foliage that has great autumn colour. Opening pale-pink the flowers age to magenta giving a multi-toned look to the plant.

Ceratostigma plumbagnoides

This little plant sits quietly filling out with green foliage until the end of the summer and then it comes into its own. The foliage starts to gain red-tints which spread as the season progresses and then clusters of electric blue flowers open in succession. For such an unassuming plant this packs quite the punch at this time of year. A little prune back by about 1/3 in late spring is all it needs to fill out and look fabulous. Happy in full sun or part shade this is a plant that thrives with very little human intervention.

Helenium

Always good performers at this time of year, add a few flames to the sunny side of the garden with some Helenium.

Genus - Helenium (hardysplants.co.uk)

Standing on strong upright stems these beauties are great for pollinators and also make fantastic cut flowers

.

Actaea

All the drama you could ever want wrapped up in one type of extraordinary plant. Tall upright stems of deepest purple with widely spaced equally dark leaves is great to start but come the Autumn the spikes of highly scented, white or pink flowers open to the delight of humans and pollinators alike. There is only one problem, collecting these is addictive.

Genus - Actaea (hardysplants.co.uk)

Echinacea

These beauties have just been collected to go off to Sussex Prairies and Wisley Flower Show but we have more. Echinacea ‘Hot Summer’ could not have been more appropriately named and is a star among our displays. Medium height, straight stems topped with flowers that are almost too intense to photograph. There are a large array of different Echinacea here at Hardy’s from those short in stature, but no less imposing, to statuesque beauties that tower at the back of the border and are irresistible to butterflies and bees.
