Description

Bistorta affinis 'Donald Lowndes'

Height x Spread:  25cm x 60cm

Groundcover rarely comes as pretty as this.  Petite flower spikes of delicate sugar pink flowers stand to attention above a low mat of dark green leaves, the flowers turning dark reddish-pink as they mature.  Prolific and long flowering, new spikes are produced from midsummer into autumn, creating a delicious multi-tonal effect, the visual display going up a further notch in autumn with the semi-evergreen foliage turning red then orange.

Tough, hardy and resistant to salty air, it is very effective at suppressing weeds but can also help to hold moister banks and slopes together.  Limited space?  It looks just as good tumbling over the edge of a planter or raised bed.  Easy to grow, it needs a moist soil with some drainage in full sun or partial shade.
