A truly gorgeous double paeony with very large aromatic flowers chock-full of petals the colour of a Chelsea Pensioner's uniform enclosing a boss of golden yellow stamens. Flowering in early to mid summer, its display of bold red blooms is straight from the parade ground. But do not overlook the attractive and useful divided green foliage, emerging in spring it forms a great backdrop to seasonal flowering bulbs and lasts well into autumn when it takes on fiery hints.
Bred by Mrs Elizabeth Falck in 1964 it has been awarded the APS Gold Medal by the American Peony Society and there are claims that it is the largest red paeony available on the market. Like many other PAEONIA it thrives in a fertile, free draining soil in sun but can also cope with part shade. A must for a sunny border or 'hot' themed planting scheme, make room for it in your cutting garden too as it looks stunning in floral arrangements.
