With the approach of Valentine’s Day, the Team has been having fun thinking of plants with associations to love or affection. LAMPROCAPNOS immediately springs to mind because of its heart shaped flowers. Its resemblance to a heart has even led to a recent introduction being named LAMPROCAPNOS spectablis ‘Valentine’, due to its elegant scarlet heart shaped flowers.
This started us thinking and reminded us quite how many plants have meanings or traditions. Some of these associations came about during the Victorian era when many plants were used to give messages that could not be spoken aloud. Today with the dominance of social media and the projection of self, the unspoken power of the flower is perhaps difficult to comprehend.
Red roses are widely accepted as a symbol of love, regularly given as a gift for Valentine’s Day. But they are not to everyone's liking. So if you fancy something a little different or want to give your significant other a significant nudge regarding what you actually want for the garden, check out our list of plants below that also offer a message of love.
