Description

Iris chrysographes 'Dark Mauve'

Height x Spread 50cm x 50cm

This Iris is the true species form of I. chrysographes found naturally growing close to water and has been raised from seed. The flowers are a rich purple in colour rather than the black-purple of the Iris chrysographes black-flowered but equally striking and elegant. The narrow lance shaped fresh-green leaves emerge first followed by the beautifully entrancing flower in late spring.

This plant is pollinator friendly, but because of the smaller and narrower shape of the flower will attract moths and beetles with their longer proboscis rather than bees which need a more open flower.  It is a clump forming, moisture loving marginal plant which means that it can tolerate occasional flooding and would be an excellent addition to a bog garden.  If possible site it close to water where its elegant profile will be reflected.  Preferring a sunny location, it looks fabulous with Cirsium rivulare ‘Atropurpureum’,  Bistorta amplexicaulis ‘Firetail’, Iris lactea or Primula beesiana.

All parts of this plant are toxic.
