Paeonia daurica subsp. mlokosewitschii

Paeonia daurica subsp. mlokosewitschii is a real favourite here on the nursery for its large elegant single flowers of clearest pale yellow picked out with darker yellow stamens. Its foliage is attractive too, emerging in early spring a smoky plum shade it opens to fresh blue-green, the divided leaves encircling the fresh buds. Its common name 'Molly the Witch' belies its beauty or perhaps describes the bewitching effect it has on people as it is much sought after and rarely available.
Native to the Caucasus Mountains in Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Dagestan, where it grows on rocky slopes in oak, hornbeam, or beech forests, this peony is very happy in dappled shade in a fertile good soil but copes well with full sun too. Its more compact size means there is no need to stake.
