This plant is often described as a sub shrub due to its growth habit, whereby the stems become woody at the base, but it can be cut down to 5cm and will regrow into a very tidy plant.
The tall flower spikes on this plant are at their best in early summer. It is a woodland plant and as such is best in a partly shady border with a reasonable soil.
